Norex is committed to sustainability, and the company’s sustainable development expert Leo Ahti<\/strong> works actively to ensure that the company’s operations align with sustainable development goals. In 2023, Norex began actively pursuing enhanced environmental friendliness, social responsibility, and good governance. Carbon footprint mapping and ESG reporting<\/strong>Leo explains that one of the most significant recent projects has been the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) assessment, which includes carbon footprint calculation. These two projects form a unified whole, examining Norex’s environmental impacts, social responsibility, and governance practices. “The carbon footprint calculation has helped us understand what our emissions consist of and where we can make the biggest changes,” Leo explains. The calculation results show that the vast majority, 99.2%, of Norex’s emissions come from the so-called scope 3 emissions category, i.e., emissions from Norex’s upstream and downstream value chain. Product manufacturing and packaging in particular are a significant source of emissions. “Almost half, more precisely 48.5% of our total emissions, come from the manufacturing of products and product packaging,” Leo notes. “This information didn’t come as a surprise, but it reinforces our focus on favoring more environmentally friendly products and packaging.” Promoting more responsible choices<\/strong>Leo emphasizes that while Norex can make its own choices regarding more responsible products and packaging, the ultimate impact also depends on customer decisions. “We can make certain choices, but if the end customer doesn’t buy them, we won’t achieve the desired impact,” he clarifies. Leo sees that consumer awareness of sustainability is constantly growing, but the change is gradual. “Sustainability is increasingly important to consumers, but it doesn’t necessarily yet drive major changes in choices,” he reflects. “Regarding packaging, for example, consumers often have the perception that wine in a glass bottle is more valuable or better than wine in a plastic bottle, even if the actual product content is the same. This is why we want to invest in our marketing communications to ensure customers have sufficient information to make more responsible choices.” Reducing the environmental impact of packaged products is one of the key objectives. More environmentally friendly alternatives include, for example, lighter glass bottles, PET plastic bottles, tetra packs, and bag-in-box solutions. Their advantage is lower manufacturing and transportation emissions. “Lighter packaging also makes logistics lighter,” Leo adds. Since logistics is another significant source of emissions, Norex aims to reduce its impact in collaboration with its logistics partners. The company emphasizes the use of environmentally friendly fuels and improving the energy efficiency of transportation. “From an environmental perspective, it makes more sense to order more products at once, from closer sources, and ensure that shipments are as full as possible. However, financial responsibility must also be taken into account here\u2014and demand largely drives our procurement,” Leo explains. Future outlook and automation<\/strong>Norex also has an ongoing project to collect information from its producers. “We ask wine producers about their current sustainability practices, including consideration of the environment and biodiversity in cultivation and production, energy and water use, social responsibility, and concrete actions and commitments,” Leo says. “With this information, Norex can communicate to its customers the producers’ level of sustainability, which helps customers make informed purchasing decisions based on their own values.” Leo also considers automating sustainability monitoring, but sees it more as improving data management than full automation. “Data collection, management, and visualization are key so that we can set measurable targets and track progress from year to year,” he states. “This way we can continuously develop our operations and respond even better to stakeholder requirements.” Social responsibility and good governance<\/strong>ESG reporting is not limited to environmental impacts alone. Social responsibility and good governance also play an important role. Leo mentions that Norex has updated its Code of Conduct, i.e., its ethical business principles, which will be published later. These guide the company’s operations, everyone’s daily work, and stakeholder collaboration. We also want to ensure that our supply chain operates responsibly. “We ourselves are committed to, among other things, Amfori BSCI ethical operating principles and also require producers to commit to them,” Leo emphasizes. They define minimum requirements for social responsibility, such as workers’ rights and fair and safe working conditions, but also take into account environmental responsibility and business. Understanding the baseline is key to success<\/strong>Leo considers the most important achievement to be that Norex now has a clear understanding of its baseline. “We know what our carbon footprint is and can set concrete targets to reduce it,” he says. Norex has taken an important step towards an increasingly responsible future, and the company now has the tools and knowledge to achieve it. Norex is committed to developing its sustainability and continues its work to reduce environmental impacts, promote social responsibility, and maintain good governance. “We now know where we are and can take steps in the direction we want to go,” Leo summarizes. <\/p>\n\n
