French producer Wolfberger is committed to working for more sustainable and environmentally friendly viticulture. The century-old cooperative is one of France’s largest wine producers and the largest in Alsace. The vineyards grow several grape varieties across multiple different terroirs<\/em> with diverse soils and microclimates. Wolfberger cooperative has 450 growers as members, who harvest their grapes from 1,200 hectares. The wines represent a broad spectrum of all Alsace wines, as they include all the region’s grape varieties and an impressive selection of Grand Cru vineyards. <\/p>\n\n

Wolfberger wants to leave the soil in the best possible condition for future generations and be tomorrow’s winemaker. The producer pays special attention to protecting biodiversity and is constantly aware of the environment. Production is thoroughly certified, and sustainable development is the company’s guiding principle. The winery is, among other things, AgriConfiance\u00ae-certified. <\/p>\n\n

To work as environmentally friendly as possible in viticulture, Wolfberger combines and develops various organic farming practices. The use of agricultural chemicals is limited, and biological interaction is used in a targeted and economical manner. In 2020, the use of agricultural chemicals was reduced by 30 percent by using natural products. Alternative methods to using chemicals also include, for example, breeding varieties to be more resistant. <\/p>\n\n

Growing so-called cover crops can also ensure natural fertilization and additional irrigation of the soil. A team of technical professionals in winemaking is also researching new agroforestry approaches to bring more natural predators of pests to the vineyards and improve the microclimates favorable to viticulture on the estates. <\/p>\n\n

Some of Wolfberger’s wines are already certified organic production or entirely biodynamic wines, and Wolfberger is indeed one of Alsace’s most important organic wine producers. The share of organic production is growing rapidly year by year: the proportion of organic farming vineyards will increase by 40 percent by 2023. <\/p>\n\n
