At its worst, it is very obvious: a clear musty, even earthy, unpleasant smell. Cork taint can of course be caused by several different chemical compounds, but one is more common than all others: TCA, or trichloroanisole. It is formed when certain fungal species react with chlorine compounds used to clean cork material.

The same detectable end result can also get into wine or other beverages from, for example, wood preservatives used in wooden structures in a wine cellar, or even in pallets. Unfortunately, cork taint-like aromas are therefore sometimes found in products other than wine as well—I’ve encountered them in garlic on more than one occasion.

But now cork manufacturer Amorim reports that they have developed a way to remove all detectable TCA from their production lines. This is great news, because with such a large manufacturer involved, there will be significantly fewer bottles sealed with natural cork in the world where TCA residues from the closure would spoil a carefully crafted fine wine.

Amorim calls this new technology they have invented Naturity, as according to them no artificial substances are needed in the process. The exact method is of course a trade secret for competitive reasons. Its launch is scheduled for early 2021. The good news is also that it does not increase costs for Amorim’s customers.

The Drinks Business also reports that another cork manufacturer, Cork Supply, has likewise announced earlier this year that it has eliminated TCA from its products—their invention is called InnoCork. It also does not increase the product’s costs or raise the price.

We welcome this news with joy! You can read the full article on the subject from The Drinks Business publication here.

The Drinks Business beverage news publication reports that the world’s largest cork manufacturer Amorim has made a breakthrough in eliminating cork taint from its products.
