Waimea Estates is one of the largest wine producers in the Nelson region of New Zealand. In the 1990s, the Bolitho family planted 140 hectares of vines on the Waimea Plains. Waimea is Maori for “river gardens,” a name that perfectly describes the Waimea Plains. The area features many small rivers, nutrient-rich stony soil, and abundant sunshine. Nelson is New Zealand’s sunniest spot, cooled by nearby sea breezes. Warm days, cool nights, and stony soil produce rich, fruity wines with fresh acidity and minerality. Every Waimea wine represents the grape and the region at their purest. Waimea wines have earned prestigious accolades both in New Zealand and abroad.
