Description
Casa Relvas is particularly aware of sustainability issues. A large number of sheep maintain the vineyards in autumn and winter, and chemicals are used minimally. This wine is named after the Merino sheep grazing in the vineyards,which is the number one sheep breed in the Alentejo region – Relvas has more than 400. Merino red wine grapes are harvested by hand. The stems are removed and the wine is aromatised 48 hours before fermentation. Fermentation takes place in refrigerated vats (lagares). 10% of the wine is matured in used 400 l casks made from French oak for half a year.

We have introduced sheep to the vineyards to reduce the use of weeds, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers through winter grazing. 50% of fertilization comes from animal compost and the winery's organic waste. In recent years, we have successfully reduced the amount of water used per bottle produced by 30 percent, and 100 percent of the water used in the cellar is recycled and used for vineyard irrigation. Because people come first, we promote local employment, provide good working conditions for our team members, create opportunities for professional growth, and invest regularly in training programs. We support social issues in the local community and local organizations.
