New: Messias Quinta do Valdoeiro
The best of Portugal: Vinhos Messias is now available from us. You’ll find Quinta do Valdoeiro Red as a new product in our range, a flavourful and versatile Bairrada. But what kind of producer is behind it?
The Caves Messias wine house was founded in 1926 by Messias Baptista, and is still managed by his descendants. Messias produces and sells quality wines from Portugal’s most important wine regions, with a repertoire that includes Bairrada, Douro, Dão, Vinho Verde, Beiras and the Port wine region. The portfolio also includes sparkling wines produced using the traditional method and aged brandies.
The producer owns several estates, the most important of which are Quinta do Valdoeiro in the Bairrada region, Quinta do Cachão in the Cima Corgo area of Douro, and Quinta do Penedo in Dão. The vineyards total over 200 hectares. Port wines are traditionally bottled in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Innovation and activity are strongly present. Messias continuously conducts research into Portuguese grape varieties and wine production. At the turn of the millennium, it acquired four new wine estates in the Dão region and began marketing Setúbal wines. New technology and production facilities are constantly being ambitiously planned.

Flavourful Bairrada
Quinta do Valdoeiro Red
The grapes for this wine have grown, as the name suggests, in Bairrada’s Quinta do Valdoeiro on slopes marked by limestone and clay. The pressed juice has fermented with the skins in refrigerated tanks, and the finished wine was aged for a further 16 months in used oak barrels.
When serving, it’s worth noting that the wine has not been filtered, so it may contain sediment. The ideal serving temperature is 16-18 °C, and the wine is also suitable for storage.
A mature all-rounder for the dining table, it pairs well with grilled dishes or roasted meat. It’s also a good match for game and casseroles. On the other hand, it also pairs well with cheeses thanks to its long and sufficiently acidic flavour.
This wine pampers the taste buds with dark berry notes and elegant fruitiness. The mouthfeel is softly tannic, dense, long and balanced.
