VINULTRA – bespoke wines from New Zealand
VINULTRA offers the world small-batch, ultra-premium wines from the Southern Valley region of Marlborough.
The company’s goal is to be a unique player in the industry and tailor techniques and operations to match conditions and partners’ wishes. One of VINULTRA’s philosophies is that in the wine industry, no two days are ever the same. The philosophy originated when the company purchased a run-down sheep farm—without a single grape vine. However, the site was recognized as having special potential for producing high-quality wines, as the soil was unique, the diurnal temperature variation favorable, and the area benefited from microclimate effects with its excellent location in the heart of Marlborough.
Using this so-called blank canvas also meant that the company could choose varieties and infrastructure that matched their goals.
Marlborough’s hidden gems
VINULTRA now has a 41-hectare vineyard, which represents just 0.14 percent of Marlborough’s total plantings. Because the company’s production is limited, VINULTRA aims to craft wines in a bespoke, artisanal manner. However, the varietal mix on the estate is diverse: 75% is Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Pinot Noir, and the remainder consists of small parcels of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer.
The availability of VINULTRA wines is therefore very limited, and some of the wines are extremely rare. Not all wines are even produced every year. A good example of this is Little Beauty Black Edition. Some wines are truly special, as they are made only once, such as Little Beauty Noble Edition Gewurztraminer 2015.
VINULTRA firmly believes that “wine is made in the vineyard,” so their techniques and infrastructure focus on quality and sustainability. The company has been sustainably accredited from day one.
Products tailored to customer needs
Because VINULTRA hails from the “new world” and is a youthful player in the wine world, they have had the opportunity to approach the market with a different take. Due to customers’ growing expectations and the ongoing fragmentation of sales channels, the company decided to create specific brands and blends to serve different market segments.
The nine different wines in the Little Beauty range are excellent examples of a portfolio that works in fine dining restaurants. The company works closely with the sommelier community to ensure a successful gastronomic experience.
Little Beauty wines are special, elegant, and multi-dimensional. They truly showcase the skills of the company’s viticulture and winemaking team. Little Beauty is currently featured on the menus of many Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury hotels around the world.
INSIGHT Single Vineyard is a wine range with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir as its core varieties. These wines could be described as varietal-typical, more playful, and more approachable compared to Little Beauty wines. The philosophy of the wines is to emphasize the sensory side of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir: it’s about aroma, flavor, and texture. For this reason, this range is particularly well-suited to casual restaurants, such as bistros and by-the-glass lists.
