Château Puybarbe is located in the Côtes de Bourg region, east of the Gironde estuary, opposite the famous Margaux appellation. The estate’s clay and limestone slopes produce classic Bordeaux wine, and most of the 41 hectares of vineyards are planted with Merlot – the rest being Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Winemaking traditions at the estate date back to the 16th century, with the oldest building from 1582. Château Puybarbe was held by the Italian Orlandi family for over 60 years until a Finnish couple, Riku and Anna Väänänen, purchased it in 2018 – bringing with them a touch of northern passion and courage. At Château Puybarbe, everything is done by hand from start to finish: from planting vines and harvesting to aging, bottling, branding, and sales. A unique touch is the collaboration with Finnish tractor manufacturer Valtra, and Finnish agricultural students assist with the harvest annually. The estate has received the Biocyclic Vegan certification, emphasizing sustainable, vegan farming and the preservation of biodiversity.
