Jean Bernard-Massard founded Caves Bernard-Massard in 1921 in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg, after studying in Champagne, France. He began producing sparkling wine using the traditional method from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Riesling grapes. The company’s start was rocky. Financial difficulties were overcome by selling Raisinor grape juice, but hard work eventually yielded results. Bernard-Massard was founded in collaboration with Belgian merchants and Luxembourgish landowners. Luxembourg’s historical ties to Belgium and Germany quickly brought the wines to international markets. Ten years after its founding, the house was appointed purveyor to the court of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, a title it holds to this day. From the start, Bernard-Massard has focused on quality and a recognizable style. After Jean Bernard-Massard died childless, leadership passed to the Clasen family, who remain the main owners.
